Know which nut trees will feel at home on your land
One unhurried hour to turn a pile of catalogues and open questions into a short, clear list of trees that suit your plot.
Back to homeThe promise of this hour
By the end of the consultation you will hold a written shortlist of walnut or pecan cultivars that suit your elevation, winter lows and soil, advice on finding healthy grafted saplings, and a simple first-year care calendar. What we aim for is a feeling of calm: the choice should no longer feel like a gamble.
If you are not sure where to begin
It is perfectly normal. Nursery listings disagree, forum advice comes from other climates, and a tree you choose now will be with you for decades. That weight can keep a good idea on the shelf. What usually holds people back is not lack of enthusiasm but lack of someone local to talk it through with.
How we approach it
We look at your plot first: elevation, winter lows, summer warmth, soil type and drainage. Then we discuss realistic options together: Shinano walnuts, Persian walnut cultivars, or pecans for warmer lowland sites. On higher Nagano plots, pecans may be a stretch, and we will say so kindly.
We also plan pollination partners. Pecans set nuts most reliably when Type I and Type II cultivars grow near each other, and it is far easier to arrange that before planting than after.

What the hour feels like
We meet at our Toyama office, by phone or by video call, whichever is easier. You do not need any prior knowledge. It helps to bring a rough location, a few photos and any notes on how cold winters get, but none of it is required. We keep the tone relaxed and follow your questions.
- Suitable for first-time growers and experienced gardeners alike.
- You may ask as many questions as the hour allows.
- Notes arrive in writing, so nothing depends on memory.
The investment
Per consultation
¥4,400
Included
- One hour with our arborist, at the office, by phone or by video
- A written shortlist of suitable cultivars
- Advice on sourcing healthy grafted saplings
- A simple first-year care calendar
What you gain is clarity: fewer guesses, and a good starting point for the choices that follow.
How we know it has helped
We measure this service simply: afterwards you should be able to name a few suitable cultivars and say why they fit your plot. The shortlist and the care calendar are the evidence. Expect honest timelines too: grafted walnuts typically bear in years 4–7, and grafted pecans in years 6–10. A consultation shortens the uncertainty, not the years.
Our commitment to you
We will be candid. If your land suits some trees better than others, you will hear it plainly. If anything in the shortlist is unclear, write to us afterwards and we will go through it again. There is no obligation to book anything further, and you are welcome to take the shortlist to any nursery you like.

- Send a short note through the enquiry form, with whatever you know about your plot.
- We reply to arrange a time that suits you.
- We talk, and you receive your written shortlist and calendar.
Autumn and winter are quiet months in the orchard, which makes them pleasant for planning, but there is no deadline on your side.
